4 Tips When Planning Your Outfits for Your Maternity Session

Overwhelmed by the thought of what to wear for your maternity session? As a maternity photographer and a mom, I totally understand. The stress of finding the perfect outfit that makes you feel incredible while also serving up that timeless look you're dreaming of can be a real challenge. But guess what? You don't have to worry because I've got your back! I've been through the same journey and helped countless moms-to-be just like you to make this process easier. So, you can trust me when I say I'm here to help you out. I’ve put together these 4 tips that I know will make this process a lot smoother!

#1 Dress For the Occasion and Location

Dressing for the occasion and location is a really important factor to consider when planning your outfits for your maternity session! If you are planning on doing your session at the beach, I would recommend opting for light, breezy fabrics that have a lot of movement. You can wear a flowy maxi dress and your partner can wear a linen shirt this way the photos will look amazing and create a beautiful blend with the beach as the backdrop! Now, if you are planning on heading to a park or into nature, comfort is important! Choose seasonally appropriate outfits and allow you the freedom to move and explore. Think of breathable cotton for the summer heat or cozy knits for a fall shoot in the park.

#2 Coordinate, Don’t Match

If this isn’t your first pregnancy, you might be thinking about involving your whole family and documenting the new addition together! However, it can be somewhat overwhelming to decide on what you and your family will all wear. But here is the thing don't stress too much about it - just aim for coordination rather than straight matching. Select a color palette that compliments and reflects your family’s unique personality! Soft neutrals, pastels, or earthy tones tend to work well and will create a cohesive yet timeless look. By coordinating outfits, you’ll create a visually appealing look without sacrificing individuality. Trust me everything will look great!

#3 Include Layers and Textures

Consider incorporating scarves, cardigans, hats, or jackets into your photos to add depth and dimension! Mixing different textures like knits or lace can create a visually pleasing variety. Layers not only enhance the aesthetics but also provide versatility during the session. Remember, when adding layers and mixing textures, focus on neutral tones! Tones that don’t go well together can be distracting and take away from the focal point, which is you!

#4 Showcase Your Personal Style

it's really important to showcase your personal style. Let your outfits reflect your unique personality and preferences! As a professional photographer, I've had the privilege of capturing countless maternity sessions. I've observed the variety of styles that moms-to-be bring to these sessions. Some stores that have consistently provided great outfit selections for my clients include Zara, H&M, Free People, and Anthropologie. These stores offer a variety of choices that cater to diverse tastes and styles. Whether it's the laid-back charm of a casual and relaxed outfit or the more elegant clothing. Your style is a part of your identity, and these photos should be a reflection of that!
