How to Have a Stress-Free Family Session with Small Children Crissy Fields, San Francisco

As a toddler mom, I know what it’s like having your child in public spaces and needing them to cooperate. Now add on a family photoshoot, trust me I know the stress you are feeling! As parents, we often worry about various aspects of the session, fearing that our children’s behavior might hinder the outcome. I want to alleviate those concerns and highlight what parents shouldn’t worry about during a family session.

Let Kids Be Kids

My favorite part of photographing small children is their natural spontaneity. Parents often worry about getting their children to pose perfectly or smile on cue. However, the true magic lies in capturing their genuine expressions and interactions. Trust me, you will want to remember what their little personalities were like! Instead of stressing about picture-perfect poses, allow your children to be themselves, encouraging playfulness and exploration.

Undivided Attention

Small children have endless amounts of energy and curiosity, making it challenging for them to sit still for long periods. Don't worry about your child's ability to stay focused during the session. A successful family session does not require sustained attention. It’s about embracing the joy and liveliness of your children. Let them run, laugh, dance, and explore their surroundings while I document those beautiful experiences. I’ve been doing this for a while; if I’m not worried about their attention span, you definitely don’t need to be!

Tricky Behaviors

As a lifestyle/documentary-style photographer, I find beauty in capturing the full range of emotions and experiences of the day. The fear of tantrums, crying, or spicy attitudes ruining the session is expected. My biggest tip is this, plan the adventure around your child. Bring their favorite sweets, marshmallows or lollipops that you know make them shine. This can help bribe kids into smiles, giggles and lighten their mood for that perfect photo. If possible, make sure they are well rested. A tired child means a grumpy child and can make sessions stressful for you as a parent. But no matter what, I will showcase the essence of your family’s love, even in the most unexpected moments.

Coordinate Outfits

While coordinating outfits can create a cohesive look, don't worry about perfectly matching every detail. The focus should be on capturing the connection and love within your family. Feel free to express your personal style through your clothing choices, allowing each family member to showcase their individuality. The beauty of documentary-style photography lies in capturing your family’s unique story, not in rigidly matching outfits.

These four tips will set you up for success in your upcoming family session. Relax and let go of your worries! I am here to capture all the candid, heartfelt moments. Trust in the process and focus on love, connection, and beautiful chaos. I’m ready to have some fun with you and your family. Book Here.
